FW Mainz: Mainz Fire Department heavily demanded on Saturday afternoon

On Saturday, January 18, 2025, the Mainz Fire Department was alerted multiple times. At 12:35 PM, both stations of the professional fire department as well as the volunteer fire department Mainz-Weisenau were called to a reported attic fire on Wormser Straße in Mainz-Weisenau.
At the scene, residents reported that there had been a fire in the attic and all persons had already left the affected apartment building. Smoke development could be seen in the upper floors. As the apartment building was located in a larger construction site, access to the building and the positioning of the emergency vehicles was initially difficult, as there was only a single-lane access on muddy ground.

Upon investigation, it was found that the staircase from the 3rd floor upwards was filled with smoke and a water pipe in the building was already damaged. A firefighting attack was quickly prepared and a team was sent into the building under respiratory protection. The attack team was able to quickly find and extinguish the fire in a toilet on the 4th floor, so the reported attic fire was not confirmed. Afterwards, the building was ventilated with high-pressure fans.

As the house is currently uninhabitable due to the burst water pipe in conjunction with the water used for firefighting, and the electricity had to be turned off in the entire building for safety reasons, some people were referred to an emergency shelter by the fire department for the weekend. The remaining residents were able to find accommodation with relatives on their own. The house was inspected by the owner together with the criminal police and was cordoned off after the operation.

A total of 46 fire department personnel, two police officers, two emergency medical service personnel, and the Mainz Networks were involved in the operation. The operation was able to be concluded after about 2.5 hours.

Further operations:

Even during this operation, when the incident command was about to reduce the number of personnel, a fire alarm was triggered at a hotel in the old town of Mainz at 1:15 PM. The fire unit of station 1 was directly called from the Wormser Straße scene. On site, the all-clear was quickly given as the system had been triggered by cooking fumes in the kitchen.

Subsequently, the rescue fire engine and the turntable ladder of station 1 were alerted to an urgent door opening in Mainz-Gonsenheim. On site, the door was forcibly opened and the scene was handed over to the emergency medical service.
