Addendum to the missing person search from 08.01.2025

On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at around 6:00 pm, the Betzdorf police and the fire departments of the VG Betzdorf-Gebhardshain were alerted for a missing person search. In the forest between Weiselstein and Gebhardshain, residents had heard multiple cries for help from a male person.
This led to a search operation lasting several hours in the forest area. Rescue dogs from the fire department, DRK and THW were used, as well as the fire department's drone unit with thermal imaging technology. Around 100 emergency personnel were involved that day. At 02:00 am, the search was finally called off without any results. There was already a vague suspicion that a drunk young man was wandering in the forest and may have called for help. On Thursday, January 9, 2025, the Betzdorf police were informed by email, but without contact details, that the person sought was safe at home. On January 14, 2025, a 28-year-old man from Gebhardshain appeared at the police station and identified himself as the cause. He said that he had been walking home drunk on foot after a dispute from Dauersberg that evening. He fell, slid down a slope, and lost his smartphone in the snow. After a short period of unconsciousness, he found himself lying in the snow and then cried out for help in his fear. However, he freed himself from his situation and walked home. He only learned about the search operation the next day.
