Special weather conditions cause extraordinary operational situation at the Ludwigsburg Police Headquarters

Onset of drizzle combined with extraordinarily cold temperatures in the past few days and nights led to an exceptional situation at the command control center of the Ludwigsburg police headquarters on Wednesday morning (15.01.2025). From around 04.30 a.
m., road users reported new traffic accidents to the police almost every minute via emergency call. The vast majority of these occurred in the Ludwigsburg district, where roads, cycle paths and sidewalks were mirror-smooth. The officers of the police stations were on continuous duty. Nevertheless, waiting times for those involved could not be avoided due to the mass of accidents. At peak times, the command control center had to coordinate more than 200 operations at the same time, including around 190 accidents related to black ice.

By 12.00 p.m., the Ludwigsburg police headquarters had registered a total of 416 accidents. The total damage is estimated at just under two million euros. 38 of these accidents occurred on the motorway sections supervised by the headquarters. Nine people suffered minor injuries, one person was seriously injured. The 378 accidents on the other roads also mostly ended without serious consequences. In twelve cases there were personal injuries, with only one person being seriously injured.

The closures in the area of the Leonberg motorway triangle between 05.50 a.m. and 10.15 a.m. and the closures of the Ludwigsburg-South and -North motorway exits in the direction of Heilbronn are likely to have caused significant disruptions for affected road users. The Ludwigsburg-South junction was closed between 05.35 a.m. and 08.50 a.m. The Ludwigsburg-North junction between 05.00 a.m. and 09.20 a.m.
