Police investigate due to property damage

(fg) On Saturday morning, an incident occurred at an information booth for the upcoming federal election in Hanau, leading the police to file a criminal complaint on suspicion of property damage. In addition, two administrative offenses were identified.
The information booth was located at the Neustädter Rathaus facing the Hanau weekly market.

Shortly after 10 a.m., during the setup of the booth, an apparently planned action by opponents took place, who are said to have positioned themselves with banners in front of the attendees of the information booth. One person from a group of about 40 is alleged to have damaged a display, leading the police to investigate on suspicion of property damage. Later, another party positioned itself in close proximity to the existing information booth, obviously to also campaign for the upcoming federal election.

Due to the existing assembly situation, the responsible assembly authority of the city of Hanau was informed and all further measures were taken in close coordination. After the relocation of the existing information booth, the group of unknowns apparently intended to disrupt it again. The group had meanwhile split into two groups. Several people allegedly tried again to surround the booth with a screen made of people and banners.

The police quickly and consistently clarified the situation, but only communicatively and through their presence. In this way, they prevented any criminal verbal or even physical confrontations between the groups involved. The police measures ended around 2 p.m. after the information booth was dismantled.

The administrative offense reports were filed on suspicion of violating the Hessian Freedom of Assembly Act. The investigations are now being conducted by the State Protection Department of the Southeast Hesse Police Headquarters. Witnesses are asked to call the criminal police at 069 8098-1234.
