At 12:00 PM, a garbage truck from the Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Region Hannover (aha) was driving along the street Am Klagesmarkt in the center of Hanover as part of the waste paper collections, when the crew noticed smoke coming from the garbage container. The driver promptly stopped the vehicle and moved it back about 20 meters to gain as much distance as possible from the residential buildings and vehicles parked at the roadside. When opening the container, the fire suddenly ignited, fortunately, the three-member crew was unharmed. The flames spread quickly and also caught the garbage truck, whose rear was on fire after a short time. The smoke plume was clearly visible in the city center. The fire brigade, which arrived shortly afterwards, quickly brought the fire under control using foam and ensured that the windows of the neighboring houses were closed.
The ongoing extinguishing work is proving to be lengthy. Since the vehicle is loaded with four tons of waste paper and can no longer be automatically emptied, the emergency services have to pull the burning material out of the garbage container step by step using a telescopic loader from the fire brigade, extinguish it and then load it into a trough for removal. The measures are still ongoing.
The fire caused significant damage to the garbage truck and parked vehicles, which cannot yet be precisely quantified. The police are investigating the cause of the fire. The fire brigade and emergency services were on site with 17 personnel and 7 vehicles.
