Dortmund: Drunk, driving too fast and with summer tires on

On Tuesday (14.01.), a district officer in the Wellinghofen district of Dortmund noticed a car whose driver committed several traffic violations. The list of identified violations grew even longer during the subsequent check.

Around 5 pm, the district officer checked a roadblock in the area of Brandisstraße: This was closed to all traffic due to the risk of falling trees between the junctions of Niederhofener Kohlenweg and Vinklöther Mark.

Suddenly, the officer noticed a VW Passat coming from the blocked area heading towards Wittbräucker Straße. He accelerated his car on the snow and ice-covered Brandisstraße to up to 100 km/h. The officer was finally able to stop the VW just before the junction to Vinklöther Mark.

Behind the wheel of the car was an 83-year-old man from Dortmund. He identified himself during the check with self-made, almost real-looking duplicates of his driver's license and ID card.

But the list of violations grew even longer: A look at the VW's tires revealed that the senior was driving with summer tires in winter conditions. In addition, the officer noticed the smell of alcohol in the vehicle. A subsequent breathalyzer test was positive, so a doctor took a blood sample.

The officer could not comply with the senior's request to let it go with a verbal warning this time: The 83-year-old now faces numerous criminal and administrative proceedings, including for forgery of documents, drunk driving, and violations of the road traffic regulations.

Especially in icy conditions, inappropriate speed and incorrect tires are among the most common causes of accidents. The 83-year-old was lucky that his risky driving did not end in an accident. The police point out that winter tires (since October 2024 only with the Alpine symbol) are mandatory in snow and ice. Also, drive carefully and at a speed appropriate to the weather conditions.
