FW Stuttgart: Black ice and road slickness cause a busy morning of operations

On Wednesday in the early morning hours, precipitation and temperatures around the freezing point triggered extreme slipperiness on the roads and sidewalks in Stuttgart. The German Weather Service had already warned of this extreme weather situation on Tuesday.
Due to the black ice, numerous pedestrians fell, and a multitude of traffic accidents occurred.

The emergency rescue service in the state capital was on constant duty in the morning. In addition to the pre-planned regular rescue service, additional ambulances and emergency vehicles with off-duty personnel were deployed. As the situation progressed, an extraordinary emergency situation was declared for the state capital Stuttgart. This enabled the activation of additional disaster control units with more vehicles to handle the multitude of operations. The Integrated Control Centre Stuttgart also increased its staff and occupied additional call acceptance positions. Waiting times for emergency calls were significantly reduced by this measure.

At times, nearly 240 full-time and volunteer emergency service personnel from the rescue service, disaster control units and the Stuttgart Fire Department were in operation, thus about 85 more emergency personnel than on a normal day. By the afternoon, the situation in the city area relaxed again, the extraordinary emergency situation could be ended and the additional units were released from duty.

By 12:00 noon, the balance of the road slipperiness for the state capital Stuttgart included nearly 200 weather-related operations for the entire rescue service including all supporting units. In addition, the Stuttgart Fire Department was involved in several technical assistance operations and in providing initial medical care. During this time, the Integrated Control Centre Stuttgart handled approximately 500 emergency calls.
