The police officers then checked the driver on Weserstraße. He claimed to be just going to the gas station. Of course, the officers pointed out to the 51-year-old that even for this, driving with such limited visibility is not permitted and they issued a corresponding misdemeanor report.
Upon checking the driver's personal details, it turned out that his driving license had been revoked several years ago. Accordingly, a criminal complaint for driving without a license followed.
Here is a note from the police:
Snow, ice, and frost challenge drivers and require particularly careful behavior in road traffic. Poor visibility and slippery roads pose difficult driving conditions. Considerate driving and adherence to traffic rules are therefore of great importance, especially in the cold season. It is not enough to scrape a peephole on the driver's side and then drive the first few kilometers in a blind flight with roaring blower and heating on until everything is defrosted.
Those who choose this convenient path increase the risk of accidents and can be fined for it.
Our tip:
Before starting, the layer of snow should also be swept off the headlights, the license plate, and the vehicle roof, hood, and trunk lid with a hand brush. Otherwise, snow caps can come loose during the drive and endanger other road users. Your own view is also at risk, for example, if snow slides from the roof onto the windshield due to heavy braking.
Winter peephole drivers face a fine
Before starting your journey, you must clear windows, lights, and the license plate of ice and snow. If you don't already have an ice scraper and hand brush, get this equipment to be able to defrost car windows. When you defrost the windows, you can have a much better overview of the traffic.
Danger from ice and snow on trucks
Precipitation often leads to unnoticed accumulations of ice and snow on truck and trailer roofs. This can quickly become a danger. Ice sheets can come loose uncontrollably and endanger both the following and oncoming traffic. Falling ice is also often the cause of traffic accidents. If an ice floe breaks through a windshield, it can lead to severe injuries.
Mount winter tires
Winter tires are mandatory in winter weather conditions such as ice and snow in Germany. If you do not comply with this and drive in winter road conditions with summer tires, you can expect a fine and a point in the driving suitability register.
Create visibility
For motor vehicles, safety is also increased during the day by switching on the lighting. Check the headlights as well as brake and rear lights. They all have to work and must not be impaired. The daytime running lights of motor vehicles are often not bright enough in poor visibility conditions such as fog or heavy rain - and many vehicles also do not have daytime running rear lights. An automatic light can also not reliably recognize fog or hazy weather. You can find more information on vehicle lighting here:
