BPOLD-B: Smuggling operation uncovered in Guben

As part of the temporarily reintroduced border controls, the Federal Police uncovered the smuggling of four people in Guben on Sunday evening and temporarily arrested a suspected smuggler. At around 7:10 pm, officers from the Federal Police intended to inspect a vehicle in the Guben area after its entry from Poland, following a tip-off from the Polish border authority about a possible smuggling operation.
The driver of the car, which was registered in Poland, ignored the stop signals and evaded the control at high speed. After a short search, the officers located the vehicle in a dead-end street and temporarily arrested the driver. The 46-year-old Ukrainian national identified himself with a Ukrainian passport and a Swiss residence permit.

There were three people in the back seat of the car and another person in the trunk. These were three Afghan nationals and one Iranian national aged between 23 and 43 years. None of the vehicle occupants had the documents required for entry or legal residence in Germany. They applied for protection at the police station.

The officers initiated investigations on suspicion of illegal entry and illegal residence against the suspected smuggled persons. The Federal Police are investigating the 46-year-old Ukrainian on suspicion of smuggling foreigners under life-threatening conditions. The Ukrainian is currently being presented to a magistrate to obtain a warrant for pre-trial detention.
