Phone scammers repeatedly use such "shock calls" to, especially older people, to take their savings. They take advantage of the shock situation and the concern for the relative and exert verbal pressure on the called persons to prevent the fraud from being detected. The scammers also try to persuade the called persons to stay on the phone and not to hang up under any circumstances. They want to prevent the police or perhaps a relative from being called.
