The driver of an SUV caught the attention of the police around 11 a.m. because he was using his mobile phone while driving. During the check, the 78-year-old man from Herzogenrath initially claimed that he had a German driving license. However, a quick check in the police data systems revealed a different result. And so, the man finally admitted without hesitation that he did not have a driver's license - and had not had one for 40 years. He had to surrender his license back then due to several speeding offenses.
The retiree now not only faces a charge for driving without a license, but probably also a long conversation with his wife, as the 72-year-old apparently had no idea that her husband was driving without a license: possibly for 40 years. (sk)
