Upon their return around 11:30 AM, they noticed that a window on the ground floor was open and immediately alerted the police. The police searched the building on Tizianstraße for suspects, but no one was found inside the house.
Investigations at the scene revealed that the unknown person or persons had climbed over a fence into the garden, which faces Rembrandtstraße, to gain access to the property. They initially tried to forcibly open a patio door, but were unsuccessful. They then pried open a window on the ground floor and gained entry. Once inside, they rummaged through cabinets and drawers in all rooms and then presumably escaped through the front door. It was initially unclear whether anything was stolen.
The police secured various pieces of evidence at the scene. Among other things, there was a shoe print on the frozen lawn in the garden, which could provide information about the shoe size.
