BPOLI MD: Two unattended pieces of luggage in trains cause police operations

On Friday, January 10, 2025, there were two incidents involving unattended luggage within the jurisdiction of the Federal Police Inspection Magdeburg: First, a customer service representative of a regional train, which was standing at platform five at Magdeburg main station, informed the emergency services at 17:25 about a trolley that was in a seating group on the train and could not be assigned to anyone. Accordingly, the train was evacuated and the explosives dog Ares was brought to the scene with his handler.
After the dog did not show any explosive-typical behavior, the silver-colored hard-shell suitcase was classified as harmless and opened. It contained clothing and a camera mount. At 22:10, a train attendant of a suburban train reported. This was at Halle (Saale) main station, on platform 10. A pink-gray sports bag was placed in the luggage rack above the window on the train. After the customer service representative had unsuccessfully made an announcement for the owner, he contacted the Federal Police. The emergency services evacuated the train, cordoned off the affected platform, and train traffic to platforms 8 to 11 was stopped. In addition, the federal police officers requested the bomb disposal service to check the piece of luggage. The specialists from Leipzig arrived at the scene at 23:20. After inspection, the officers were able to give the all-clear, the bag was classified as harmless and also opened. It contained sports clothing and various hygiene items. At 23:35, this operation could also be completed and the cordons lifted. Due to the police measures, two trains were delayed by a total of 86 minutes. No clues to the respective owners could be determined yet. However, the corresponding video data backups were carried out for further investigations. The suitcase and the sports bag were finally handed over to the lost and found offices of Deutsche Bahn. As such situations occur again and again, the Federal Police urgently points out: Please take care of your travel luggage! Keep it in sight at all times and always carry it with you. In addition to possible luggage theft, as in the two current cases, police operations can result in financial regress. In addition, such incidents always have far-reaching restrictions for other people, which could be avoided with the appropriate care of the respective owners.
