(KA) Weingarten - Wrong-way driver on the A5

An 85-year-old man drove his vehicle on the Bundesautobahn 5 between Karlsruhe and Kronau in the wrong direction for about 18 kilometers on Monday night. Fortunately, no one was injured and no property damage occurred.
Several road users reported to the police around 01:00 a.m. a silver VW driving in the wrong direction on the northbound lane of the A5 between Karlsruhe and Kronau. The wrong-way driver is said to have driven his car at about 60 to 80 km/h towards the south on the left lane until he was finally stopped by two patrol crews near Weingarten. Previously, the traffic heading north had been stopped by the highway police shortly after the Karlsruhe Nord exit to prevent a possible serious traffic accident.

The wrong-way driver appeared very confused during the check. His driver's license was confiscated.

The 85-year-old now faces charges for endangering road traffic.
