The realistic and somewhat theatrical oil paintings of Kyoto-based artist Tomona Matsukawa are inspired by interactions with other women of her generation, frequently strangers. The artist uses startling statements or unforgettable conversation events to inspire her subject matter and title.

Matsukawa uses excellent realism and dramatic light and reflection to invite viewers to explore and create their own tale from these daily fragments. Her paintings depict human frailty and interiority by reconstructing these little moments on smooth, flat canvas.
